AUSTRALIA’S ARKABA TRACK
We start this Dream Journey with a Greek. More than 2000 years ago, Aristotle believed there was a Great Southern Land far away; a huge continent that kept the earth in balance. And he was right! The first arrivals were in for a treat when they discovered Australia. The seasons were reversed, swans were black, trees lost their bark instead of leaves, crocodiles were gigantic, and weird creatures bounced about. Australia has captured our imagination for decades, from the Great Barrier to the Red Centre to the rain forests of Cape York, the Opera House and the 13 Apostles.
To us it seems fitting that we include Australia in our walking series of Dream Journeys with a three day, 43 kilometre private trek through the outback. The Arkaba Track located amongst the Flinders Ranges has been sculpted by millions of years of rain, wind and sun to form fractured, furrowed landscape of deep valleys and fearsome ridges. Rare wildlife has become highly adapted to this unique environment and we can promise some incredible sightings during the walk. The area is also rich with ancient rocks that have yielded fossils of the oldest known forms of primitive life and whose discoveries have rewritten the science books. Traverse rolling hills and red-rock ridgelines that reveal sweeping vistas and 600-million-year-old geological marvels, all while accompanied by a seasoned local guide who brings the region’s rich Aboriginal and pastoral history to life through storytelling and firsthand knowledge.
Each day concludes with an indulgent twist on the classic outback experience. After a rewarding hike and perhaps a swim in a secluded waterhole, you’ll relax with a glass of premium South Australian wine in hand, dining alfresco on authentic bush-inspired cuisine as the sky ignites in a blaze of sunset colors. As night falls, you'll retire to a deluxe swag under a canopy of stars, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wild. With opportunities to spot emus, kangaroos, wedge-tailed eagles and more in their natural habitat, and the rare chance to truly disconnect, the Arkaba Walk offers a perfect fusion of luxury, adventure, and soul-stirring connection to the land.
We combine this walk with three iconic Australian cities, award winning vineyards and multiple chances to marvel at Australia’s incredible art scene. And for those craving more isolation, there are an array of luxury wilderness lodges within the region.
