NEPAL, BREAKFAST AT 14,000 FEET

A living royal goddess, the Kumari, has elected to live here since the 17th century. That should tell you that Nepal is unique. In fact it is the only country in the world where the elevation ranges from 60 meters to over 8,000 meters above sea level. Here Hindus and Buddhists cross paths in the spectacular expression of their faith. Here five seasons (the four usual ones and the monsoon) interact dramatically with unique biomes and ecosystems. Wedged between China and India, Nepal is a world of changes and contrasts. Everybody thinks “Everest” when you say the word Nepal. Very few would think jungle and rhinos, rice paddies, a maoist government and 30 million people. This land locked country has had a rocky history, from a civil war involving Maoist insurgents, the whole royal family being killed in one night, the terrible earthquake of 2015…Nepal has been through a lot. But the mountain gods keep an eye on the Nepali and the country is slowly getting back on it’s feet with a renewed stable government and an economic recovery (albeit very slow). Longitude 80 will guide you through the birthplace of Lord Buddha, along emerald hills painted with colorful flowers, through pristine forests, medieval cities and, of course, some epic mountains.

Begin in Kathmandu, where a kaleidoscope of vibrant energy and chaos collides with the architectural grandeur of the ancient Newari civilization. Wander through narrow alleys lined with centuries-old temples and palaces, and participate in sacred Hindu prayer ceremonies as incense fills the air. Head out to the countryside to discover vividly painted Buddhist monasteries nestled among rolling hills, where Nepalese monks invite you to slow down and embrace your inner stillness. Cycle through isolated farmland and immerse yourself in local agricultural traditions that have sustained mountain communities for generations. Then, ride a Mustang horse alongside a local guide through the mystical Mustang Valley, an area rich in Nepalese and Tibetan culture and untamed natural beauty that mirrors the rhythm and resilience of its people.

For adventure seekers, Nepal offers unmatched experiences in the lap of the Himalayas. Embark on breathtaking treks through the Annapurna region, where many hikers find their own version of Shangri-La among dramatic landscapes and remote villages. Take a walk on the wild side by becoming a wildlife ranger for the day, tracking elusive Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinos, and Asian elephants in the Chitwan National Park. Stay in the cherished abode of Sir Edmund Hillary, who once called Nepal his happy place, and connect with local Sherpas to gain insight into life lived at the top of the world. Hike along the ancient yak trading trail to the basecamp of Pikey Khop for panoramic Himalayan views once reserved for nomads. Finally, cap off your journey with a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter flight over Everest Base Camp, toasting a champagne breakfast in the shadow of Earth’s highest peak—a fitting end to a deeply moving exploration of Nepal’s soul.

The Nepalese have a word when greeting each other. Namaste. It means this…” The light within me bows to the light within you”. That in itself describes Nepal…

WHEN?

The best time to go to Nepal is in October and November. February is okay if a bit of cool weather doesn’t scare you, March to May is also recommended.

HOW LONG?

We usually propose a 10 to 12days stay, depending on flight arrivals and departure times from Kathmandu.

WHERE DOES IT START?

Kathmandu is served by several airlines, Air India, Emirates and Qatar Airways offering the largest number of options. You will probably have to go through India, Thailand, Malaysia or Dubai first.
