INDIA’S BIG CATS

Few places on Earth can boast the extraordinary privilege of being home to not one, but four of the world’s most iconic big cats: the Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, Indian leopard, and the elusive snow leopard. This expedition to India offers the unique chance to encounter these apex predators in their natural habitats, each set against a dramatically different backdrop that reflects the country’s astounding diversity. The Bengal tiger, prowling the forests and grasslands of Ranthambore, represents one of the most iconic predators on Earth, while the Asiatic lion, found only in Gir National Park, is a living relic of a species that once ranged from the Middle East to India. The Indian leopard, with its adaptability and stealth, thrives even in human-dominated landscapes like the granite hills of Jawai, Rajasthan, and the elusive snow leopard rules the high-altitude deserts of Ladakh, rarely seen but vital to fragile mountain ecosystems. Each species is a testament to India’s commitment to preserving its wildlife heritage, and a carefully curated expedition provides a rare chance to witness these extraordinary animals in the wild while supporting ongoing conservation efforts.

This journey ventures into some of India’s most remote and dramatic landscapes, guided by the country’s top naturalists and wildlife trackers. In Gir, the dry teak forests and open savannah provide the perfect backdrop for observing lion prides, while in Jawai, granite boulders and hidden waterholes are home to leopards that skillfully navigate a mosaic of wilderness and human settlements. Ranthambore blends historic fort ruins with lakes and dense jungle, offering incredible tiger sightings, while the stark, high-altitude deserts of Ladakh present a rare chance to glimpse the snow leopard against snow-capped peaks. The wildlife experience extends beyond the big cats, with opportunities to see rare gharial crocodiles, sloth bears, wild deer, antelope, and hundreds of bird species, ensuring every day brings new discoveries in these extraordinary ecosystems.

The expedition offers a variety of immersive ways to experience these landscapes and their inhabitants. Guests can explore on jeep safaris through dense forests and open plains, traverse rocky hills on horseback astride Marwari horses, or gain a new perspective on the desert terrain via camel safari. For the more adventurous, biking and guided hikes through the wilderness provide intimate encounters with wildlife and the rhythms of nature. Each mode of travel allows visitors to witness behavior, track prints, and capture incredible photography moments, all while minimizing disturbance to the animals and supporting conservation-friendly tourism practices.

Cultural experiences complement the wildlife adventure, creating a holistic journey through India’s natural and human heritage. Meet nomadic Rabari herders in Jawai, explore historic forts and palaces in Ranthambore, and visit ancient Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh, each offering insight into centuries of local traditions and history. Immersive activities, from learning local crafts to sharing meals with communities, enrich the understanding of how humans and wildlife coexist in these regions. This expedition is not just about seeing India’s iconic big cats — it’s a deep dive into the landscapes, people, and conservation stories that make these animals and their habitats so extraordinary.

WHEN?

We base this trip around the snow leopard given that it is the most elusive of the cats. The best window for spotting them is November through to mid-April where they discend to lower altitudes in search of prey.

HOW LONG?

To see all the cats, we recommend a trip length of around 24 days. However we can tailer a trip to your needs and focus on just one or two.

WHERE DOES IT START?

Starts and ends in New Delhi with a chance to experience bustling urban India before heading into the wild.

DID YOU KNOW?

No two Bengal tigers have the same stripe pattern, making these stripes a vital tool for tracking and studying individual tigers.
